Step 1 – Don’t Freak Out. Try Calling Your Mobile Phone First

  • Call or message your phone using another device. Chiang Mai locals are generally honest—someone might pick up.
  • Use Find My iPhone (Apple) or Find My Device (Android) to check the location or make it ring.
  • If offline, mark it as lost and leave a number on the lock screen.
  • If you’ve got banking apps, crypto, or personal data on it, consider remotely locking or erasing the device.
  • For Thai SIM users, log in to your provider’s account and pause the service or SIM.

Step 2 – Think Carefully – Where Might You Have Left It?

It helps to get specific about your last movements. Ask yourself:

  • Were you in a red songthaew, Grab, or tuk-tuk?
  • Did you stop at a temple, coffee shop, market, or tourist site?
  • Did you sit down somewhere and forget to grab your phone?
  • Were you distracted at a night market or festival?

Figuring this out determines which direction to go next. If you’re completely lost about what to do next, let us start an investigation. Links below for our Chiang Mai Report Form.

Step 3 – Lost It at Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX)?

If your phone went missing at the airport:

Chiang Mai Airport Lost & Found (AOT)

  • 📍 Ground Floor, near Arrival Hall
  • ☎️ +66 53 270 222 ext. 2142
  • ✉️ [email protected]

If you lost it on the airplane, contact your airline directly. Their office will be inside the terminal or reachable by phone/email. Please note, the level of English on a phone is drastically reduced when two people who are non-native English speakers are trying to communicate. Take your time and don’t get frustrated. • For taxis: If you remember the car number, color, or route, call Chiang Mai’s Department of Land Transport: ☎️ 1584
  • If it was a songthaew (red truck), ask locals or vendors where you were dropped off. Some drivers check for lost items at the end of their shift.
  • If your hotel booked it, they might be able to call the same driver for you.

Step 5 – Lost It in a Grab or Bolt Ride?

  • Open the Grab or Bolt app
  • Go to your trip history and select the specific ride
  • Use the Report an Issue or Lost Item feature to contact the driver
  • Drivers in Chiang Mai often return lost items if contacted quickly

Step 6 – Lost It in a Café, Restaurant, or Hotel?

  • Return as soon as you can and talk to the staff or manager
  • Ask if they have CCTV or a lost and found box
  • Leave your number and a detailed phone description in case someone turns it in later

Hotels especially are good about keeping lost items at the front desk.

Chiang Mai’s street markets and temples are busy places where phones get lost often:

  • At Night Bazaar, Sunday Walking Street, or Warorot Market, check with vendors, security staff, or police booths
  • For temples like Wat Phra Singh or Wat Chedi Luang, speak to monks or volunteers on site. They may hold onto found items until someone returns
  • Leave your contact info and keep checking back if it hasn’t been found yet

Step 8 – Contact the Chiang Mai Tourist Police

  • ☎️ 1155 (24/7 English-speaking)
  • Or go directly to the Chiang Mai Tourist Police Station:
📍 Moon Muang Rd. (just inside the old city near Tha Pae Gate)
  • Bring your passport, device details, and a way to identify the phone (model, lock screen, IMEI if possible)

If your phone had visa info, passport scans, or anything sensitive:

  • Contact your embassy or consulate in Chiang Mai or Bangkok
  • Immediately change all your passwords: banking, Gmail, social, etc.
  • Remotely erase the phone if you haven’t already

Smart Tips to Avoid This Next Time

  • Use a waterproof case with a strap when outdoors or during Songkran
  • Keep your phone’s IMEI and SIM info saved somewhere else (email or cloud)
